If you’re ready to improve your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, grab your journal and start writing.  Your state of mind will be positively impacted while you’re writing; and you’ll continue to reap additional benefits long after you put your pen down.

Managing thoughts and feelings.

At any given time, you may have a complicated mix of thoughts and feelings swirling around in your head.  Managing all those thoughts and feelings is no easy feat.

As you write about different situations in your life, you can start to organize all those thoughts, while getting more in touch with your feelings. You’ll feel better in the moment and long afterwards too.

Where is your stress coming from?

Where is all that stress and tension that you’re experiencing coming from?  Journal writing can help you clarify not just what’s happening, but where it’s coming from.  You’ll start to get a clearer picture as you get things out of your head and sorted out on paper.

When you start to sort out and unload all that disorganized activity in your mind, you also start to release some of the stress that goes with it.  You’ll feel calmer in the moment and better equipped to deal with whatever you have going on.  There's a good chance you'll find yourself sleeping better too.

Journaling for deeper healing.

In addition to helping you manage day-to-day stress, journaling also provides an opportunity for deeper healing, by allowing you to address past issues that are still affecting you.  As you explore past issues from the safety of where you're at today, you can look at events from different angles, with the aim of reframing them and resolving them.

The key to making this kind of journal writing effective?  Approach your writing with a clear focus and purpose.  You don't want to replay the past with no focus or purpose, as that puts you in danger of getting stuck in an unproductive loop.  You want to examine and explore events in a way that leads to greater insight and understanding, so you can come to some type of resolution.  This allows you to heal and frees you up to move forward.

Is a digital journal just as effective?

Putting pen to paper in an actual journaling notebook is an enjoyable part of the writing experience for many people.  The journal notebook you select, the writing implements you choose, and how you use your journal (drawing or adding pictures, for example) are a means of self-expression.

But you have other options to choose from.
Maintaining a journal in a digital format is just as effective in terms of all the health benefits.  Whether you write by hand or type on a keypad, either method allows you to capture, sort through, and process your thoughts and feelings.

Digital journaling might also be the preferred option for someone who wants the ability to do their writing on the go, since most people have their devices with them at all times.  An electronic format can also be useful for searching and retrieving old journal entries.

Do you need to write every day?

There are no rules when it comes to journaling; explore and discover what works for you.  Many people feel good about committing to daily writing at a set time.  Other people find their writing fluctuates along with their emotional state, and they prefer to write when the mood strikes them.

Ultimately, you're in control.  Journaling is a tool that everyone will use differently.  How you use it in your own life is entirely up to you.

Helpful tips for starting your journal-writing journey.

If you're just getting started with the practice of journal writing, here are some helpful tips:

  • Whether you go with a hard-copy notebook or a digital journaling, select a format that you feel comfortable with and that you'll actually use.
  • Determine from the start how you will keep your journal private.  This is essential, so you feel safe to express yourself openly and honestly.
  • Don't censor what you write, just let your raw thoughts and feelings come out.  This allows you to see what's really going on inside of you, and it can be quite revealing.
