Do you struggle with achieving your goals? Why do some people consistently achieve so many of their goals, while others get off to a good start and then fizzle out midway through? Having the right mindset is crucial for achieving goals in any area of your life. The following five elements comprise the mindset you need to have to successfully achieve your goals. 1. Commitment Maybe you’re contemplating cleaning up the garage. Or thinking about how nice it would be to go on a vacation next winter. Perhaps you’re considering that it’s time to rework your budget so you can get out of debt. Weeks pass, turning into months, and you’re still contemplating, thinking, and considering. However, nothing has changed and you haven’t made any real progress. Prior to making a commitment, you don’t have a goal; you're just bouncing ideas around as you reflect on what you want. There’s a time and place for bouncing ideas around, but the danger is when you get stuck there without moving forward. Commitment is central to setting and achieving your goals. When you commit to something, it’s no longer just an idea floating around in your head. A commitment means you’re prepared to take action to achieve whatever you’re going after, and that's what turns your idea into a goal. 2. Motivation Why are you setting this goal? Sure, improving your health by changing your diet sounds like a sensible thing to do. But does it truly matter to you? Why is it important? What will you gain by achieving the goal of improving your health? How will you benefit? Motivation is more than just a feeling. Motivation is all about identifying why you want to achieve something. Why is it important? Why does it matter? Why is it worth your time and effort? Motivation is key to successfully achieving your goals, as it’s your reason for doing whatever it is you’re doing. Once you identify your motivation, staying in touch with it as you move ahead will ensure you don’t become distracted and lose your focus. 3. Determination Determination is the firm or fixed intention to achieve a desired end. That’s the mindset you need to have to achieve your goals. When you run into challenges and setbacks, determination keeps you going. When you’re not seeing an immediate return on all the time and energy you’re investing, determination keeps you going. When you feel like packing things in and walking away, determination keeps you going. Not a feeling, but a firm or fixed intention. 4. Clarity You often hear that goals should be specific. The more specific your goals are, the more likely they are to be clear. And clarity is a benefit at every stage of the goal-setting process. You want to be clear on:
Clarity brings increased confidence and a sense of control as you work towards achieving your goal.
5. Objectivity
Is your goal realistic? Have you developed a sound plan? Do you have everything you need? Objectivity is all about being honest as you assess what you’re about to do and the road ahead. Does that mean you can’t aim high or take a risk? Not at all. Being objective allows you to take stock of your situation so you know where you stand and what you need. That means you’re better equipped to set yourself up for success even as you aim high and take risks. Objectivity also helps you guard against pitfalls and setbacks that could knock you off course. For instance, have you thought about potential challenges you may encounter? Do you have strategies for dealing with those challenges? By addressing these potential problem areas objectively beforehand, you won’t be blindsided and overwhelmed if/when issues arise. Instead, you’ll be prepared and ready to respond effectively.
