![]() Why is it some people seem to have much better luck than others? We've all met people like that; those fortunate individuals who seem to draw good luck to themselves like a magnet. Wherever they go, good things happen to them. How do they do it? What's their secret? Even though good luck is partly a matter of chance, it is indeed possible for anyone (including you) to attract more of it. You might not be able to control exactly when, where, and how good luck will strike. But with a few simple changes in behaviour, you can increase the likelihood more good luck will find its way to you. Do something. Anything! There's a saying that good luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. If that's the case, you want to open the door for as many opportunities to come your way as possible. You do this by taking action of some sort. Your action could be sending out a resume for a new job. It could be learning something new, by enrolling in a class or taking up a new hobby. It could be as simple as visiting a different grocery store in your neighbourhood. It truly doesn't matter what it is; every time you take action and do something, you create an opportunity for good luck to happen. For instance, on that visit to a different grocery store, you might find your favourite brand of olive oil on sale. Or you might run into an old friend you haven't seen in years. Smile and be friendly; take an interest in people. Much of the good luck that we encounter in life comes to us through other people in our lives, but not necessarily through the people we know best or the people we've known the longest. Oftentimes, good luck comes through people we know casually or someone we've just met. That's because these are the individuals who are most likely to introduce us to something new, something that falls outside our usual routine. Simply by being approachable and taking an interest in people, you make room for more of these lucky connections to occur. Counter negative "I'm so unlucky" self-talk with something more positive. That inner dialogue taking place in your head has an enormous impact in your life. Negative self-talk influences how you carry yourself, the choices you make, and how you interact with the world around you. If you want to attract more good luck into your life, make sure you've got an appropriate message playing in your head. An encouraging message like, "I'm ready for some good luck to come my way," might not be magic, but it will lift your spirits and brighten your demeanor. This will affect how you come across to others and how they respond to you, and sets the stage for positive, and potentially lucky, encounters. Slow down and notice what's happening in your life. Are you always in a rush or preoccupied with getting to the next item on your agenda? Rushing or being distracted as you move through your day can cause you to miss out on good luck when it presents itself, because you just don't notice it. Slowing down and paying attention will make you more aware of who is around you and what's going on around you. When you slow down and become more mindful of your surroundings, you're more likely to see connections, solutions, openings, and opportunities you would have otherwise overlooked. Get in the habit of applying the above practices on a regular basis, and get ready for more good luck to come your way!
