We live in a world where we're constantly surrounded by noise and commotion, often to the point where it's overwhelming.  Journal writing is a great way to tune out the noise, and get tuned in to what's going on inside of you.

Through writing, you can begin to identify, clarify, and process your deepest thoughts and feelings.

Whether you've been keeping a journal for awhile, or you're just getting started, the following journal writing ideas will help you explore new territory in your reflection and self-discovery.

Have the conversation you've always wanted to have.
It isn't possible to go back in time to relive a situation in person, but you can go over the situation in your journal.  Your journal provides a safe place for you to express all the things you wish you were able to say.

Write a letter to your younger self.
If you could visit your younger self, what words of wisdom would you most want to share?  What advice would you give regarding what's really important in life, and what isn't all that important at all?  This is a great way to get in touch with your values and priorities.

Write a message for someone to find in the future.
Imagine you're writing a message that will be found by some future generation.  What do you want them to know?  Will you share about yourself?  Your family?

This can be a fun exercise, but it can also get you thinking deeply about yourself and your life.

Describe your ideal day.
This is an excellent writing exercise for those periods when you're feeling stuck, confused, or unclear on what direction to go in.  Don't censor yourself or get caught up in what is or isn't realistic. Give yourself permission to express whatever comes to mind, freely and honestly.

As you review what your ideal day would look like, you'll gain insight into what's missing from your life currently.

Write a letter of forgiveness to yourself.
Mistakes and missteps are an inescapable part of life.  Far too often, we carry around a heavy burden of guilt or regret; we, continue to punish ourselves long after the situation has passed.

A letter of forgiveness allows you to acknowledge the situation, take responsibility for it, and then move on from it.
