Achieving a Healthy Body and Mind:  Little Changes That Yield Big Results

When it comes to improving your health and well-being, it doesn't matter what your starting place is; there's always something you can do to get yourself moving in the right direction.  And those initial steps you take don't need to be extreme or overwhelming.

In fact, it's better to start off with small, manageable changes.  As you follow through with taking small steps consistently, you'll see and feel the effects both physically and mentally.  Over time, these healthy behaviours will solidify into long term habits that become second nature to you.

Here are five small changes you can make that will yield big results for your physical health and mental well-being.

1. Move your body every day.

Want to boost your energy, improve your mood, and keep your body healthy?  Get your body moving!  It doesn't matter what your fitness level is to begin with, and there's no need to do anything extreme or strenuous.  Instead, look for natural, easy ways incorporate more movement into your day.

For example, head out for a walk at lunch time or after dinner.  Or, if you spend much of your day sitting, make a point of taking frequent breaks where you get up and walk around.  This kind of gentle, regular movement helps to ease and stave off aches, pains, and joint stiffness.

2. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

Quality sleep is essential for good physical and mental health.  Your body repairs itself while you're sleeping, which is why you're more vulnerable to getting sick when you're sleep deprived.  Poor sleep quality also makes it more difficult to cope with stress and routine daily challenges.

A consistent sleep schedule makes it easier for your body and mind to intuitively sense when it's time to start preparing for bed.  You'll fall asleep more easily, get better rest, and find it easier to wake up in the morning.

3. Don't keep everything in your head; make a list.

It takes energy to mentally keep track of all the things you need to do, and this becomes draining after a while.  It can also become a distraction; having your mind on everything you need to do prevents you from giving your full attention to the task at hand.

Ease that strain and make things easier for yourself by keeping a to-do list of all the things you need take care of.  You won't have to worry about forgetting anything once it's written down, freeing you up to focus fully on whatever requires your immediate attention.  Plus, you'll enjoy the satisfaction of crossing things off your list once they're done!

4. Clean up the clutter and keep your living space organized.

It's hard to maintain a clear, focused mind when you're surrounded by clutter and everything is in disarray.  Take the time to tidy things up and put things in order, and notice how much better you feel afterwards.

Invest in a few decorative baskets and use them to gather up all those odds and ends you have scattered about.  Bonus:  with all those loose items in one place, it becomes much easier to find something when you need it.)

5. Work more leafy green vegetables into your diet.

When it comes to your health, you can't go wrong working more leafy greens into your diet.  Rich in vitamins and minerals, filled with fibre, and low in calories, these nutrient-dense foods are beneficial for your entire body, from your brain to your bones.

Spinach and lettuce are well-known, but don't overlook other options like kale, bok choy, Swiss chard, collard greens, arugula, and endive.

Discover creative ways to work more leafy greens into your diet.

Conclusion:  when you're trying to make healthy changes in your life, the key is taking that first step to get started.  Begin with something small and take action.  Seeing and feeling the impact will motivate you to continue on, while laying the foundation for more changes ahead.
