Life is filled with ups and downs, and a bit of stress (a lot of stress, in some cases) is inevitable. But stress doesn't have to get the better of you. The key is knowing the steps you can take to manage stress effectively, and then taking action. The following tips will give you an edge in dealing with daily challenges and stressors. You'll be able to think more clearly and solve problems more effectively, all while feeling calmer and more emotionally stable. Instead of being overwhelmed with stress, you'll be better equipped to keep your composure and stay in control. 1. Skip the junk food and snack on something healthy. Stress increases cellular activity throughout your body. This, in turn, increases the nutritional demands on your body. It's easy to reach for junk food when you're rushed and under pressure, but go with something healthier instead, like fruit. It's just as convenient to snack on some grapes as it is to grab a donut or chocolate bar, and your body will benefit. You'll find it easier to maintain energy and focus, and you'll be less likely to get run down and become sick. 2. Take nutritional supplements. Nutritional supplements will give your body an added boost in dealing with stress. Eating well is important (see #1 above) as it provides a solid foundation, but you're still vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies due to the demands being made on your body. Taking supplements will provide that extra little bit of support to ensure your body is getting all the vitamins and minerals it needs to function at its best. Supplements will also support your mental health, so you're less vulnerable to symptoms of anxiety and depression. You'll find it easier to stay emotionally balanced and stable, which will help you cope with difficult situations. 3. Have some fun — whatever that means to you personally. We all define "fun" in different ways. Some people love to get outdoors in nature. Some people enjoy being physically active, going for a bike ride or a hike. For other people, nothing beats sitting back and watching a funny movie, doing a bit of gardening, curling up with a good book, or even just working on a crossword puzzle. Whatever it is that you find fun and relaxing/energizing, take steps to make time for it in your schedule. It will help you clear your head, and you'll come back to things feeling fresh, revived, and renewed. 4. Get quality sleep. The need for quality sleep can't be overstated. You might be able to get by from day to day even if you're not getting all the sleep you need, but it will take a toll. You won't be functioning at your very best, and your ability to function will be increasingly compromised over time. Little things that normally wouldn't be an issue can become more stressful and difficult to deal with when you're sleep-deprived. Sleep is essential for your body to rest, repair, and recharge, both physically and mentally. Adequate sleep improves your ability to cope, so you're better able to deal with stressful situations in your life while remaining emotionally self-controlled. You'll also find it easier to think clearly and creatively in situations. 5. Draw on good relationships for support. The love and support of others can be a tremendous help when you're dealing with stress in your life. When you're feeling overwhelmed and out of control, it helps to have people around who can offer words of encouragement, along with a reminder that you've got what it takes to push through. Talking things out and having someone to listen can be refreshing and strengthening. It helps to know someone is in your corner, thinking about you and rooting for you.
