Journaling isn't just about recording the day's events (although you may want to write about that.)  Journaling affords a safe, private space for you to freely engage in self-reflection.  It's an opportunity to pause and take a closer look at where you've been, where you are, and where you're headed.

There's room for your thoughts, feelings, dreams, and ideas to be explored as you put pen to paper.  In the process, you become more aware of, and attuned to, your truest self.  With this increased self-awareness, you can gain clarity and insight about what you need in order to be your best self and live your best life.

Here are five powerful journaling prompts to put you in touch with your authentic self.

1. What are three things in my life that put a genuine smile on my face?

It doesn't matter if the reason for your smile is love, joy, peace, satisfaction, security, amusement, or something else.  Whatever the motivation, what matters is that you've identified things that are clearly meaningful for you.

2.  What is the best thing that has happened over the past year?

A lot can happen in a year, but when we're caught up in what's going on today, it's easy to forget great things that happened not to long ago.  As you recall your special memory, enjoy the experience of reliving it!

3. What, if anything, do I feel is missing from my life at this time?

We all go through periods in life where something is missing.  It may be a vague sensation, or it may be something that's gnawing at you incessantly.  Take the time to reflect on what it is that's missing from your life that would make you feel happier and more fulfilled.

4.  If I could change three things in my life, what would I change?

Sometimes, we forget that we really do have the power to make changes in our lives!  Go ahead and reflect on the changes you would like to make.  Once you identify them, you can start exploring ways to make them a reality.

5.  Where would I like to be one year from now, and why is this important to me?

It's important to take time out to cultivate a vision for yourself.  From there, you can start planning out the steps needed to get from where you are to where you want to be.

Remember:  there's no right or wrong when it comes to your personal journal.  It's your private space to commune with yourself and express yourself freely.  Rather than self-censoring yourself, give yourself permission to be totally honest about who you are; that's what authenticity is all about.
