With the spread of the coronavirus, much of society is either slowing down or shutting down. People are staying indoors. Physical contact is being discouraged, as we are advised to keep some distance between ourselves and others. A new term has entered the lexicon: social distancing To say that people feel shaken is an understatement. Beyond inconvenience, people are feeling fear and helplessness, neither of which is constructive. This is a time when you want to be at your very best physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. With that in mind, here are some tips for weathering the coronavirus storm and getting through this period. Eat well; fill your diet with plenty of natural, whole foods. Good nutrition is the number one way to strengthen your immune system so you're better able to fend off any virus you may come into contact with. That means plenty of natural, whole foods like fruit, vegetables, beans, lentils, and whole grains. Conversely, try cutting down on ultra-processed, pre-made dinners and sugary snacks. These items contain lots of extra ingredients that you don't need, like chemical additives and preservatives, and anything high in sugar will actually deplete your body of much-needed nutrients. Get a good night's sleep. Your body needs adequate quality sleep to go through the process of repair and rejuvenation. Without it, your immune system will be compromised. Simply getting enough rest is one of the best things you can do for you body. It will also help you to stay more balance emotionally, so you're better able to cope with everything going on. Work on managing stress and anxiety. You may experience feelings of fear and anxiety, but you don't have to let those feelings control you. Don't stuff your feelings or ignore them; acknowledge what you're feeling. But then work on moving to a different place. There are many techniques that can help with this, such as a regular practice of yoga, meditation, visualization, or journaling to work through your thoughts. Don't forget deep breathing, which is simple enough for anyone to do, yet incredibly powerful in calming your mind and relaxing the sympathetic nervous system so it doesn't remain stuck in "fight or flight" mode. Honour your spiritual self. When things are happening on a global scale, it can feel incredibly overwhelming. This is precisely the time when you need to honour your spiritual self and tune in to your deeper awareness. This will look different for different people, but the ultimate goal is to recognize that you are a spiritual being in a physical body, and part of something bigger than yourself that possesses order and meaning. When circumstances appear frightening or chaotic, look within. Allow yourself to be anchored by your own inner spirit as you engage in spiritual practices that are meaningful for you. Draw on soothing rituals and routines. Now is the time to draw on those rituals and routines that are special and meaningful for you. You can't control everything going on in the world, but you can take charge in your own life. Doing so will leave you feeling focused, strengthened, and empowered; and you'll have a sense of structure and order in the midst of all the confusion and disorder. Nurture meaningful connections with others. Wherever it's possible and safe to do so, connect with people in person. We are social beings, and we need human contact. Where direct contact is not possible, skip the text messaging and engage in a direct conversation by phone. Find out how others are doing, and share how you're doing. Offer support and encouragement to others, and be open about expressing your concerns and need for support and encouragement. You'll find that other people are feeling the same way you are; they share your questions and concerns. The more openness there is, the deeper the bonds that will be formed, and you'll come away with a revived and uplifted soul. These simple practices will go a long way in helping you to push through any kind of challenge that comes your way.
