A major risk when relying on AI is its tendency to generate content that sounds credible but is completely made up — a problem commonly referred to as “hallucinations." Even more concerning, AI often supports this fabricated content with non-existent sources, making it appear authoritative and trustworthy. Recent research from OpenAI, a leader in the AI space, indicates some AI models produce hallucinated content up to 48% of the time. That means your AI writing tools could be making things up nearly half the time!

Studies have also shown that the risk of false or inaccurate content is higher when it involves health-related subject matter.

Quality

Many readers immediately recognize the tone and delivery style of AI generated content. Even when an AI tool produces content that is objectively well-written and technically sound, it can never infuse your content with genuine human emotion; nor can it provide the credibility and relatability that comes with writing from personal lived experience.

Is there any place for the use of AI tools in content creation?

I do not deliver AI-generated content; you can rest assured all my content is original.

However, if a client of mine wishes to incorporate AI tools as part of the process, I believe there is a place for responsible AI use — as long as it serves to support (not replace) the writing process and the project itself. As an example, this might entail having a qualified writer involved throughout to:

  • Guide the content generation process with effective prompts.
  • Review the output to verify factual accuracy, quality, and suitability for the intended audience.

As content goals differ widely, the question of whether to use AI writing tools to help produce content depends on the nature of the project and the audience. Ultimately, the best approach is always the one that meets your needs and achieves your goals.
